Mozambique

Adam Clements Safari Trackers is happy to be working with a long time hunting company in Mozambique.  We operate Coutada 10 – one of the few formally proclaimed hunting areas in Mozambique. The huge area covers a wonderful range of varying habitat with the Zambezi river floodplains, swamps, grassland and dense forest. As a result, a wide range of species is offered, ranging from the small and elusive forest duikers to the popular African big game such as leopard, lion, buffalo and elephant.  This hunting area in Mozambique is a remaining piece of timeless Africa – and a safe and stable destination.  Hunters visiting our areas enjoy top success rates on all species and typically get the species they are hunting for.

Coutada 9
Coutada 9 is an old original Mozambique hunting area just south of the great Zambezi River. It comprises a million acres of basic wilderness with only a handful of indigenous inhabitants. Our safari operator from Zimbabwe took up this once depleted area a few years ago  and has turned it into some of the best unfenced plains game hunting we’ve ever seen. Sable and Lichenstein’s hartebeest occur in good numbers and Livingstone’s eland, kudu, bushbuck are excellent there. Nyala, common reedbuck, oribi, impala, red duiker, grey duiker and bushpig are also available. The warthogs have to be seen to be believed. Lion and elephant are available on a limited basis but lion trophies are typically superb. One nice feature of this hunt in Coutada 9 is that it can be reached by vehicle in 5 hours from Harare, Zimbabwe avoiding the typical expensive Mozambique charter. Border crossing is no problem and the drive an adventure in itself. Camp is a typical tented affair under huge shade trees on the river bank. Tents are very comfy with en suite bath. Food is plentiful and quite good. What we see as the great advantage to this hunt other than the great hunting is that you can book a plains game hunt at plains game rates in this very wild area. Essentially you can have a “Classic” safari experience without the price on Coutada 9.

Coutada 10
The concession Coutada 10, which covers an area of 1,200 square miles (200 000 hectares) of unfenced wild hunting grounds, is where we operate. The area was formally proclaimed some 45 years ago during the time of Portuguese rule. Before the war, Safari Landia operated the area with such great classic hunters as Wally Johnson, Harry Manners and Robert Ruark visiting the area regularly. The l buck, Lion, Leopard, Bush pig, Warthog as well as all of the forest duikers – Blue duiker, Red duiker, Suni and Oribi are typically found in this area. There are a few permanent rivers with many Hippo and Crocodile in the area, with the Zambezi River the largest. During the civil war, the area was not hunted. The 494,000 acres of wilderness is bordered by about 30 miles of Indian Ocean coastline on the south-eastern side. Coutada 10 is situated adjacent to the south-western boundary of the Marromeu Buffalo Reserve.  Depending on the time of year, up to 30% of the area is wetland with enormous swampy plains. On these plains one can on occasion see herds of several hundred buffalo and it is also here that most of our buffalo hunting is done.  The pygmy antelope like the Suni, Oribi and the Forest duikers enjoy growing popularity amongst hunters. With lots of natural water, hippo and crocodile hunts are something special.  Because of the high rainfall season during the first half of the year, the hunting season in Mozambique is from June to the end of November. Occasional rain may still occur during this period. Due to the relatively short hunting season, one can expect to share the camp with other hunters.
